AC Repair Cost Guide 2026

Most AC service calls are far less expensive than a full system replacement, but compressor, coil and refrigerant-related problems can turn into major decisions.

Typical range: $150–$1,800+ Updated August 2026

Most AC service calls are far less expensive than a full system replacement, but compressor, coil and refrigerant-related problems can turn into major decisions.

What AC repair usually costs

Standard AC repairs often begin with a diagnostic visit and then add parts and labor. Smaller electrical or control repairs can remain in the low hundreds, while compressor, coil and major refrigerant-system work can move well into four figures. Emergency timing and peak summer demand can push the bill higher.

Common AC repair price ranges

RepairPlanning range
Capacitor / contactor$150–$450
Thermostat or control issue$150–$500
Condensate / drain issue$125–$450
Blower or fan motor$350–$1,200
Refrigerant leak diagnosis / repair$300–$1,500+
Compressor / major sealed-system repair$1,200–$3,000+

When replacement is worth comparing

If the system is in its mid-to-late teens, has had repeated failures, or needs a repair costing a large share of a new system, ask for both repair and replacement pricing. Older R-22 systems can also be expensive to keep operating because the refrigerant is no longer produced or imported for new supply in the United States.

How to avoid an emergency AC repair

Change filters on schedule, keep the outdoor coil clear, maintain drainage, and have the system checked before peak cooling season. Maintenance cannot prevent every failure, but it can catch electrical, airflow and refrigerant symptoms before the hottest week of the year.
